In Lexington, Kentucky, SUN Behavioral works with partners in the area to solve the unmet needs that exist in our neighborhoods. This is true for SUN Behavioral facilities throughout the country.
Our top priority is delivering positive outcomes for our patients and their families. This includes providing education about the recovery process and programming that can turn lives around entirely.
In the United States, more than 43 million adults experience mental illness. For teenagers, 1 in 5 experience a severe mental health disorder at some point, and for preteens, that number hovers around 13%.
You are not alone. If you or someone you love is struggling, we can help. SUN counselors are ready seven days a week to help with everything from urgent situations to questions about our programs. Our program accepts many major healthcare providers, including Medicare and Medicaid.
In Lexington, and Fayette County as a whole, it is estimated that on average, a resident has 4.3 mentally unhealthy days per month. The Kentucky state average for mentally unhealthy days is 5 per month.
Mentally healthy or unhealthy days are measured through self-reporting from people within the community. Considering whether a day was healthy or unhealthy often is determined by asking a series of questions that include:
On top of the mental health challenges faced by Lexingtonians, 21% of residents in the area admit to excessive, or binge, drinking.
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), “Binge drinking is a pattern of drinking alcohol that brings blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08% — or 0.08 grams of alcohol per deciliter — or higher.” This typically means a male has had five or more drinks within two hours, or a female has had four or more drinks within two hours.
With the rehab needs of many in the community unmet, SUN Behavioral is here to offer solutions. With our new satellite facility in Lexington, patients will have the opportunity to receive evidence-based treatment for mental health disorders and substance use disorders.
Services for adults and adolescents in Fayette and surrounding counties with a “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM) diagnosis can take place in a partial hospitalization program (PHP) at the facility.
In the SUN Behavioral PHP, patients may be at the facility for as many as five hours at a time, five days per week. All programming during this time spent at the facility will be conducted by licensed psychotherapists, nurses, and ancillary therapists.
The beginning of each patient’s time with the facility will include a psychiatric assessment, history and physical, nursing assessment, psychosocial assessment, ancillary assessments, risk assessments (CSSRS), treatment planning, and discharge planning.
Often seen as a step-down program from PHP, intensive outpatient treatment for mental health and substance use is perfect for the person just exiting PHP or for the person needing more flexibility in the scheduling of treatment.
Services for adults and adolescents in Fayette and surrounding counties with a DSM diagnosis can take place in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) at the facility in Lexington.
Treatments for these diagnoses will likely require two hours of clinical treatment three times per week at the facility. All programming will be conducted by licensed psychotherapists and begins with a psychiatric assessment and planning for treatment as well as a plan for discharge when recovery has been reached (if necessary).
The services you will receive during visits to the facility include:
Speaking with others facing similar situations to yours. This is great for breaking down the feelings of loneliness often felt during mentally unhealthy periods of time
Trauma-informed treatment from a trauma-informed staff
For anyone receiving treatment at our facility, these are the staples of treatment. You can also expect help with aftercare planning and consistent updates to care as they are needed.
Outpatient services are among many forms of treatment available to help with mood disorders, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders (having both a mental health and a substance use disorder at the same time). Outpatient treatment provides patients with the necessary evidence-based therapies to create positive change while also leaving flexibility to maintain a life away from treatment.
During outpatient treatment, patients are aided in tackling their most pressing challenges.

Stress and anxiety may seem like unavoidable parts of life, but it is not entirely accurate to think that. While normal days may include stressful situations, crippling stress and anxiety are nothing you need to live with – especially if it is pushing you to a place that requires drug use.
