A Path to Recovery

A staggering 20 percent of youth ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition, and 50 percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14. As one of the country’s most comprehensive behavioral health organizations, SUN works to make life better and create positive outcomes for families dealing with child and adolescent mental health issues. Our psychiatrists, master’s level therapists and nurses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help uncover complex emotional issues and offer the best care in the least restrictive way possible.

SUN’s Child and Adolescent Programs are designed to support the unique needs of children (ages 6-12) and adolescents (ages 13-17) experiencing psychiatric crises and mental health disorders. When your young person is struggling, we encourage parents and loved ones to look out for the following warning signs.

Warning Signs

Feeling sad, depressed or withdrawn for more than two weeks (e.g. crying regularly, feeling fatigued and unmotivated)
Thoughts or actions of self-harm
Increased impulsivity and risk-taking behavior
Sudden overwhelming fear or panic attacks, often with a racing heart, physical discomfort or rapid breathing
Lack of appetite, nausea/vomiting or using laxatives to lose weight; significant weight loss or gain
Severe mood swings or persistent worrying that cause problems in relationships
Drastic changes in behavior or personality (e.g. prolonged bed-wetting, poor impulse control)
Problems concentrating or staying still that can lead to difficulties at school or an unwillingness to attend school altogether
Decreased ability (or inability) to function and complete activities of daily living

Our Adolescent Therapy Includes Two Service Levels:

Inpatient Program for Children and Adolescents

In some situations, especially when children or teens are a danger to themselves or others, they may benefit from the comprehensive support and structure of inpatient care. During this period, they will receive the attention and treatment necessary to get back on a path of wellness.

Patients receive medical and clinical assessments
Group and individual sessions focus on current issues, cognitive therapy, and healing and moving forward
A treatment plan and team consisting of psychiatric and medical specialists and therapists

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adolescents

For the individual who may be stepping down from hospitalization but still requires the support and structure IOP provides (or who may need more intensive treatment than that offered by traditional outpatient care).

Patients attend three groups per day, three days a week
Sessions include cognitive therapy

Adolescent Counseling Program Features

Treatment involves resolving the symptoms leading to hospitalization, crisis planning and engaging the family in the appropriate continuing care needs.
