Children Psychiatry Program

Helping young people through the struggle

Helping children struggling with psychiatric issues, substance use, or other behavioral health problems can be the most heart-wrenching and confusing time a parent will ever face, but there is hope. At SUN, our experienced and encouraging team will identify your child’s needs and provide effective treatment options for children to set your family on a path to healing. To get started on the journey of recovery, please call 713-552-0796.

A Path to Recovery

As one of the country’s most comprehensive behavioral health organizations, SUN works to make life better and create positive outcomes for families with children facing mental health issues. Our psychiatrists, master’s level therapists, and nurses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help uncover complex emotional issues and offer the best care in the least restrictive way possible.

SUN’s Children Program is designed to support the unique needs of children (ages 6-12) experiencing psychiatric crises and mental health disorders. When your young person is struggling, we encourage parents and loved ones to look out for the following warning signs.

Warning Signs

  • Feeling sad, depressed, or withdrawn for more than two weeks (e.g. crying regularly, feeling fatigued and unmotivated)
  • Thoughts or actions of self-harm
  • Increased impulsivity and risk-taking behavior
  • Sudden overwhelming fear or panic attacks, often with a racing heart, physical discomfort or rapid breathing
  • Changes in weight or appetite, nausea/vomiting, or using laxative to lose weight
  • Severe mood swings or persistent worrying that cause problems in relationships
  • Drastic changes in behavior or personality (e.g. prolonged bed-wetting, poor impulse control)
  • Problems concentrating or staying still which leads to difficulties at school or an unwillingness to attend school altogether
  • Decreased ability (or inability) to function and complete activities of daily living

Treatment involves resolving the symptoms that are leading to hospitalization, crisis planning, and engaging the family in the appropriate continuing care needs. Communication and treatment interventions are geared toward the developmental stage of each child. We use a safety system to teach the children to develop an internal sense of safety and control. SUN’s comprehensive treatment features include:

  • Psychiatrists and nurse practitioners
  • Compassionate around-the-clock nursing care
  • Developing a safety empowerment system
  • Internal control
  • Play therapy and mindfulness
  • Academic enrichment
  • Family therapy and parent/child
